needless panic I spent the last two days in a completely crazy panic because I thought I'd lost something precious to me. I remembered packing it into my bag before I left home yesterday morning, and discovered halfway to Newbury that it wasn't there any more. All kinds of "lost" scenarios were playing through my head. Turns out that 530am memories are unreliable, because I found it on my bed, along with other things that I had last minute unpacked. If I hadn't been staying at a friend's rather than in a hotel last night, I may well have driven all the way back to Stoke just to check. For those of you who know what I didn't lose, I know I may sound completely crazy at this point - but seriously considering searching the car whilst driving down the M40 was far madder ... could just reach across to the other side of the passenger seat and see if it's there ... might be able to reach down to the floors in the back ... I usually consider myself to be a safe driver! I had a lovely night last night though. The friend I was staying with was ill, so I went out for drinks with his Dad, and then he, his father and sister and I all ate bread, cheese and fish, clustered around their kitchen table. T'was nice and the hours vanished more quickly than hours are supposed to. Current Mood: relieved |

Scary Comic
This is the scariest thing that could possibly happen. I actually couldn't watch Exorcist 3 because I thought this was gonna happen in it, but later someone told me it just sucked all the way through [edit: They may have been wrong!].
There is a new Wigu comic about Hugo's Aunt's Church and there will be another one on Friday about getting to the bottom of it. |

Digg People Man, Digg people are dumb. Or should I say most of the commentors are way stupid, like so stupid they paid for they myspace account. It got like 600 Diggs so that means at least some of them are pretty good. One of my favorite stupid things people do on Internet is type "CAN I HAVE MY 30 SECONDS BACK." Dude, you're dicking around on internet, it's not like you were gonna do anything worthwhile with that 30 seconds. Current Music: Fujiya and Miyagi |

Change, and move on... So, term finished yesterday. Lots of people asking me what I'm doing next & telling me I'm brave / looking surprised when I give them the honest answer "Look for a new job". What did they think? I only handed my notice in last week, and I've had umpteen-and-one things to do to ensure as smooth a hand-over as possible in the circumstances. Kids were a mixed bunch - year 9s high as kites, year 10s just about the calmest I've ever seen them! We made welsh cakes every lesson. Two of the year 10 girls had made me a card & one of the year 7 tutor group I've been working with gave me a lollypop! Had a staff 'do' after school, where everyone staying & getting an internal promotion got a round of applause & everyone leaving got a prezzie & card (I got £25 in John Lewis/Waitrose gift vouchers). Then, after hanging up the tea towels, dish cloths & oven gloves for the last time, I said my goodbyes individually. Got a hug from the head - as did other people who were leaving - so I suspect he'd had more than the one glass of bubbly! Anyhow, today the plan is: have a bath hang up washing put on more washing do washing up get hair cut find latest version of CV & revise it find jobs to apply for |

Not Being at Comic-Con It feels sort of weird not being at Comic-Con when everybody else is. I was kinda expecting to be a bit sadder than I am, but things changed. First time we went was 2001, with just me and Rich and Johnny as spectators and it was so exciting and new. Then the next year we exhibited at small press and it was so much fun! Then it got bigger and bigger and more difficult each year until last year to me it really felt like just going through the motions. Completely expected stress. Not having a new book ready because of all the time spent on other junk. I feel like there's a way to make it fun like it was at first. I think what I need to do to get that moving is get TopatoCo completely autonomous. Then become a "creator" again. I'm a cartoonist, dangit. Time to restart! Which reminds me... Poker busts in Toronto http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_24961.aspx4 underground cardrooms in Toronto were raided and dozens of arrests were made. The absolute stupidity of this is magnified by the fact that employees of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation have joined the Canadian Auto Workers Union and then promptly gone on strike. Obviously the police have nothing better to do with themselves... Current Mood: tired |

Hellboy 2 Once upon a time Guillermo del Toro thought to himself, "Hey I got a bunch of rubber skin and fake eyeballs and feathers and shit left over from Pan's Labyrinth."
And with that, they made Hellboy 2.
The end.
FUN FACTS: Selma Blair was not technically conscious at any time during the filming of Hellboy 2, and the Hellboy/Abe drunk scene was 100% improvised.

AN INTERVIEW WITH ME My friend Joey from A Softer World Dot Com did an interview with me, and I think it turned out really cool! He asked questions that I don't normally get asked. Since we've been friends for years, we ended up with a back-and-forth turned out well and very honest, I think. It's the first interview I ever did where I asked the interviewer some questions too! check it outHere's my favourite part of it. I'm trying to answer a question from Joey about where I see myself in five years, about whether or not I choose adventure over stability. I end up here: You know as well as I do that, as cartoonists who do our work online, who pay someone else to handle t-shirt shipping, all we need to make our comic is a laptop and some internet access. We can work from anywhere and there's literally no business reason to stay in any city for any reason of time. I think it's one of the few jobs where you can do that. But I've lived in Toronto for the past four years and I only traveled to Spain to present a paper for my grad work. So I look back at that and I say, wow, there's not much adventure there. Even with no reason to stay in place, I haven't moved.
There's a reason for that, of course: I have friends here, it's easier to work in a single place, I've been trying to get to a place where I don't have to worry about money. It is the trap of saying "I'll travel when I can afford it" and then doing it when you're old and can't enjoy it as much, but for now it seems reasonable. Plus I really like it here?
To answer your question as honestly as I can, I've wanted since I was very little to not have to worry about money. I've never been poverty-level poor (I mean, there's been years where I've been officially beneath the poverty line, but that wasn't poverty: that was being a student and living the Student Lifestyle), but I've been in a place where you know you can't afford a better-quality food, where you can't do certain things because of money, and I'd prefer not to have those problems if I can. I sort of have troubles with money in general, with how it determines so much of our lives but with how we all try to ignore it, but I would like to be (and stay) in a place where I can pick up some new comics and games and not worry about how much they cost.
This is terrible; you're asking me where I want to be in the future, what I want my life to be like, and the only thing I can tell you is "Man, all I know is I don't want to be POOR."
So listen, you choose adventure over stability more often than I do. When you get an advance on a book, you tend to live it up for a few days, be really generous to your friends, and then it's back to same old Joey. You've slept in way more dumpsters than I have. How come you always make rent? Read on to find out the answer! Current Music: Christopher Tin - Baba Yetu |

Dream Catcher Come Rescue Me
As a half-Cherokee, half indeterminable honky I have to do a joke like this every six months or I have to refile the paperwork. It's complicated.
And another mangy, emaciated week nuzzles desperately at our ankles. Will we nurture it and let it grow to its full potential, only to reel in shock when we find a ruined hundred dollar bill in its poo-box? Will we pretend we didn't notice it and limp hurriedly away from the dollar store, and pick up a 30-pack of PBR on the way home and spend the next two days playing GTA IV in between passouts? My belligerent scrawl would be somewhere near the checkbox of column B if I didn't have so many god dang things to do.
In the morning there will be a new Wigu comic about all the different kinds of churches. |

Counterfeit
Do counterfeiters ever get away with it? In all my years on the force I've never heard of one case of a counterfeiter getting away with it. The Alex Jones in me thinks this is because they don't want people to know that it's possibly to get away with, but the rational sane person in me thinks "no. Probably not."
There is a new Wigu comic about going to church. Enjoy your various weekend activities. |

Horror Hut God dangit I just found some scripts I had written that I was missing for Wigu where him an Hugo go into a "scary ride" but it's just a trick to get them into a "Hell House" type thing but instead of being about Jesus it was more about the Buckle People and their Protestant Scientologist ways. This was some pretty good stuff too I think but who knows... Susan has special feelings for a boy, but unless she intends to procreate, she’d better just put a cork in it, so to speak. What happened to Timmy? He used the phone on a Tuesday… and Lord Xenu doesn’t like it when you use the phone on a Tuesday. Oh my goodness Charlie what’s going on in there Throwing up my guts Why Because I touched myself ...maybe it wasn't so good, maybe the Lord was looking out for me. Oh well can't go back now! Note to self: Get better system also better attention span and long term memory. Self: This may involve quitting drinking. Note to self: Motion to strike from record. It's Self-Cleaning Plastic
I don't see what the big deal is, everybody knows the kind of plastic they make plastic bottles out of doesn't get as dirty as the plastic in plastic cups. Plus you can re-put a cap on the hole of a plastic bottle but you can't plug up the hole in a cup and probably bugs crawl around in there and stuff. That's why you have to wash plastic cups after every time you use them but not plastic bottles.
Anyway we got all moved and on Friday I should have a fully-functional home office, which is like the regular office except the bathroom is the next room instead of a hundred and seventy five feet down a hall. For you this means comics coming out regularly again, like when I don't eat hot dogs four days in a row. |

I must attract the difficulties This morning at 6am, when I got into the giant Vauxhall Zafira that is this week's hire car of choice, everything worked. I was able to find the adjustment buttons for everything, the key turned, there were no flashing warning lights, and once I'd figured out how to be rough with the gears, it looked like the car was going to be okay. That was too much to hope for, though. Now, give National their due, I've never yet had the same problem twice. Today, despite a signed tag on the keyfob to say that all the fluid levels have been checked, which is something I've never seen before, the oil warning light came on when I was just 60 miles down the motorway. Now in Newbury, I'm waiting for the AA. So much time wasted. Current Mood: irritated |

sunshiny day today it is sunny and...almost warm! i think i will be ok going out in sandals and a t-shirt with no jacket. i'm heading out to do some grocery shopping, take the recycling to tesco's and stop by the best sandwich van i have found in the uk so far. he makes the most delicious chicken tikka sandwiches i have yet to taste! i have finished this infernal baby blanket and will be mailing it to my mom later today. i will try to post a photo of it later on. my knuckles and joints hurt and i feel a slight nauseous sensation in my stomach just at the thought of that lemon-lime yarn. suffice to say, i will never commit to crocheting a whole blanket in less than a week ever again! i have learned that my stimulus rebate check finally arrived to my apt in hoboken. yay! karine is sending it to me here in the uk, though i'm not sure how i will manage to cash it or deposit the funds (since they're in dollars, obviously). hm...i'll figure something out. San Diego Comic-Con I should probably take a moment to mention that I am not going to San Diego Movie TV Celebrity Star Trek Comic Con this year. I'm actually sort of excited about not going. I may not go next year. If I do go again I'm just gonna set up a little personal table with artwork and books and stuff. I wanna go to APE and stuff like that. OH YEAH. I am going to Connecticon. Foreign Policy
Congratulations go out today to Mr. Jon Rosenberg who finally got a book deal! We are all very excited about this. This goes to prove that if you do something long enough and do it as hard as you can, you will get a book deal.
Since I am the owner of TopatoCo I get to welcome the webcomic Amazing Super Powers to the TopatoCo label! Amazing Super Powers is extremely hilarious and they got some good designs. Go look please.
Anyway this week is gonna be tough because we're moving to a new house. I will try to update as hard as I can but it ain't gonna be easy that's for sure. I got Wigus written but I have to get time to draw them, and also run for president. Also TopatoCo has been really busy and we're a little behind but not for long. Ok! |
